The two licences, and why almost nobody asks for both
This is the part of hiring an HVAC company that actually protects you, and it is the part that gets skipped. A single furnace-and-air-conditioner job in Ottawa sits under two different regulators, and a company can be entirely legitimate on one side and not the other.
- The gas side is TSSA. Under O. Reg. 212/01, nobody may install, alter, purge, activate, repair, service or remove gas equipment without a certificate, which TSSA issues as G.1, G.2 or G.3. The company must also be registered as a contractor, which is separate from the individual technician holding a ticket.
- The refrigerant side is a compulsory trade. Air conditioning work is compulsory in Ontario under O. Reg. 876/21, so the individual doing it needs a certificate of qualification. Only a small number of trades in the province are compulsory, and air conditioning is one of them.
- Ask for both, on the estimate. Not a verbal assurance on the doorstep. A company that holds them will not mind writing them down, and one that hesitates has told you something.

What actually decides the bill in Ottawa
- A sizing calculation, not a rule of thumb. An oversized furnace short-cycles, which is louder, less comfortable and harder on the equipment. Ask whether the quote is based on a heat-loss calculation for your house or on the size of the box that is already there.
- Emergency calls and planned work are different markets. A no-heat call in February buys you whatever is on the truck at whatever it costs. If your furnace is near the end, getting quotes in September is worth real money.
- Rental contracts outlive the equipment. Several of the largest companies here sell rentals as well as installs. Read the term, the buyout and the exit clause before signing, because that contract is attached to the house.
- Ask what the quote excludes. Venting changes, electrical work, a condensate drain and permit fees are the usual items sitting outside the headline number.
How to use a list like this without getting burned
Review volume tells you a company has been around and that a lot of people have had an opinion. It does not tell you they will be good on your house, on your date, at your price. Shortlist two or three from above, then insist on a written quotenaming the equipment model, the sizing basis, both licences, what is excluded, and the labour warranty as distinct from the manufacturer's. Compare them on the same basis.
And read the one and two star reviews specifically, sorted by most recent. A company at 4.9 across several thousand reviews can still have had a bad six months, and that is exactly what an average hides.
