House cleaning is not a licensed trade in Ontario. That leaves two things you can actually verify before someone works in your home unsupervised: what goes into the contract, and what goes into the bucket.
Health Canada's position is categorical: it is never safe to mix bleach with other cleaning products. Bleach reacts with any cleaning product containing ammonia or an acid, and that includes vinegar, which is the substitution people make when they are trying to be gentler.
Used on its own, household bleach can still irritate or burn skin, eyes or lungs if it is not handled safely. Health Canada also advises making only as much diluted bleach solution as you need and not storing the leftovers, because a stored solution is one somebody later forgets contains bleach.
This is worth raising with a cleaning company rather than assuming. A crew that brings its own products should be able to say what they are, and a crew using yours should be told which of them must never meet in the same room.
Ontario's consumer protection rules cover hiring a service, and they are most useful on recurring work. Where a written estimate is in the contract, the final price cannot be more than ten per cent above it unless you agree to a new price and sign a change.
If you negotiate and sign in your home, that is a direct agreement with a ten-day cooling-off period starting when you receive a written copy. Keep the copy. For an ongoing arrangement, get the cancellation terms in writing at the start rather than when you want to stop.
None of these prove quality. They establish that there is a business behind the person at the door, which is the part that can be checked in advance.
ATC Cleaning, an Ottawa company that publishes its rates at we-clean.ca, charges $40 to $50 per hour for recurring cleaning; $75 per hour for a one-time clean. We checked its pricing page on 2026-08-29 and again on 2026-10-01.
