View Habed RenovationsBefore you hire in Westboro
In Ottawa finishing a basement requires a building permit where the work involves installation, erection, extension, or material alteration or repair.
That covers most real basement finishes, including framing new rooms. Damp proofing an existing basement is separately exempt, and creating a basement apartment can require a plumbing permit as well.
Designated heritage buildings and properties inside a Heritage District Overlay are not covered by these exemptions, and the City asks owners to confirm with a Building Client Service Centre before starting.

Common questions
Hiring in Westboro
Westboro is one of Ottawa's most sought-after urban neighbourhoods, just west of the downtown core along Richmond Road. Its homes are largely older, from century properties to mid-century bungalows, many now being renovated or torn down for infill builds. That makes Westboro a hub for full renovations, additions, high-end kitchen and bath work, custom decks, and mature-tree care. The businesses below serve Westboro and the central-west end.
Finishing over a damp basement traps the problem behind new walls. A good contractor checks for water and addresses waterproofing or drainage before framing starts.
A finished basement, and especially a bedroom or secondary suite, needs City of Ottawa permits and code-compliant egress windows. Confirm the contractor handles this; it protects resale and safety.
