Why a cleaned carpet should be dry within a day
The part of carpet cleaning a homeowner can judge is the water. Health Canada's cleaning guidance is to take out as much as possible and get the carpet dry within 24 hours, because mould can start within 48.
Drying is the part to ask about
Health Canada's indoor air guidance for cleaning carpets is to maximize the water extracted, increase ventilation or open windows so carpets dry within 24 hours, and dispose of the dirty water properly. It also suggests cleaning in winter, when relative humidity is lower.
Its mould guide explains why: mould begins to grow within 48 hours in an area with too much moisture, and mouldy carpet and underpad have to be cut out and thrown away.
Between cleanings
Health Canada's advice for dust and dust mites is to vacuum carpets, curtains and soft furniture often, with a HEPA-filtered vacuum or a central vacuum vented outdoors, and to keep indoor humidity between 35% and 50%. For someone with allergies it suggests considering hard flooring in place of carpet.

What to ask before booking
- Which method, and how long the carpet will stay damp.
- Whether area rugs are cleaned in your home or taken away, and whether pickup and delivery are included.
- Whether upholstery, stairs and mattresses are priced separately from the carpet.
- For a carpet under warranty, whether the cleaning method is one the carpet maker accepts. Keep the receipt.

Hiring a carpet cleaner in Ottawa
What separates a great carpet cleaner from a cheap quote, and the questions worth asking before you sign.
Ask how much water they leave behind
Health Canada's cleaning guidance is to extract as much water from the carpet as possible and ventilate so it dries within 24 hours. Its mould guide says growth begins within 48 hours in a damp area, so a carpet still wet the next evening is a problem.
Book it for a dry month
Health Canada suggests doing carpet cleaning in winter, when relative humidity is lower, so carpets dry faster. In an Ottawa summer, open windows or run the air conditioning after the clean.
Rugs and upholstery are separate jobs
Ask whether an area rug is cleaned in place or taken away, whether pickup and delivery are included, and whether the sofa and stairs are priced on their own. Get it in writing before the truck arrives.
Keep the receipt for the warranty
Carpet makers can tie their warranty to professional cleaning. Shaw, for one, requires proof of periodic cleaning and names hot water extraction as its preferred method.
