How Much Does a Garage Door Cost in Ottawa? Two Published Lists, and Why One Reads Half the Other
Last reviewed August 2026.
A new garage door in Ottawa is published at $1,700 to $2,900 installed for a standard steel door by one company, and at $900 to $4,000 for the door alone with $300 to $800 of labour on top by another. Both figures were read on 2026-08-28. Both figures are real. They describe two ways of writing a quote, and comparing across them makes a door look like half the price of a job.
Averaging them would bury the difference. One question reconciles the two, and it is whether the price includes the installation. Both lists are below, unaveraged.
Two Ottawa price lists, side by side
Both columns are figures published by named Ottawa companies on their own sites, both read 2026-08-28: Ottawa Garage Doors & Openers, whose page is labelled a 2026 Ottawa pricing guide, and Advantage Enterprises Windows & Doors, published 2026-04-09 and last modified 2026-05-23. They are two companies' pricing, not ours and not a market average. This directory publishes no prices of its own.
One disclosure before you read the table. Advantage Enterprises is listed in this directory, under windows and doors. It is quoted here only for figures published on its own site, it is not a garage door listing, and it does not appear among the companies named at the foot of this page. Nothing about quoting it moves any position anywhere, and no business pays for a listing or for position on this directory.
| What is being priced | Ottawa Garage Doors & Openers | Advantage Enterprises |
|---|---|---|
| Single door, standard 9x7 ft | $1,700 to $1,900 installed | from about $900 basic and uninsulated |
| Single door, insulated | not listed separately | up to $2,800 or more |
| Double door, standard 16x7 ft, steel with basic insulation | $2,500 to $2,900 installed | from about $1,200 for basic versions |
| Double door, insulated | $2,500 to $2,800+ installed, polyurethane R-18+ | up to $4,000+ for well insulated |
| Installation labour | inside the installed prices above | $300 to $800 or more, separately |
| New opener | chain $450 to $650, belt $550 to $750, smart WiFi $650 to $950 | an extra $400 to $700 for a decent model |
| Opener battery backup | +$80 to $160 | not listed |
| The whole job, low to high | full door replacement $1,000 to $2,800+ | $900 to over $5,000 |
One list quotes the job. The other quotes the door.
The two whole-job ranges start at $1,000 and at $900, which looks like agreement until you read the labour row. Advantage Enterprises puts installation at "$300 to $800 or more, depending on the complexity and if the old door needs to be hauled away", as a separate line. Ottawa Garage Doors & Openers writes its prices as supplied and installed, so the labour is already inside them.
Do the addition and the two lists stop disagreeing. A $900 basic single door plus $300 to $800 of labour is $1,200 to $1,700on the road, which runs straight into the other list's $1,700 installed floor. The apparent gulf between a $900 door and a $1,700 door was never about the door.
With two quotes in front of you, the number is the last thing to compare. Get these answered in writing first:
- Does this include installation? If the answer is no, the price is a product price and you are missing a few hundred dollars.
- Does it include taking the old door off? Advantage Enterprises names removal as one of the two things that move its labour figure.
- Does it include hauling the old door away? That is named separately from removal on the same list, and it is the line most easily lost in a verbal quote.
Insulation is the step that moves the price, and one list contradicts that
On the Advantage Enterprises list, insulation is the single biggest lever on a single-car door: about $900 for a basic uninsulated option against "$2,800 or more for insulated, higher-end models". That is roughly three times, and the words carrying the difference are uninsulated and insulated.
The other list does not behave that way, and it is worth saying so rather than smoothing it over. Ottawa Garage Doors & Openers prices a double steel door with basic insulation at $2,500 to $2,900, and a polyurethane insulated double described as R-18 or better at $2,500 to $2,800 or more. On that list the better insulated door is priced at or slightly below the basic one, and no explanation is published for why. If you are quoted from a list shaped like that, ask what separates the two products, because the price is not telling you.
Neither company publishes an energy saving figure for an insulated door in Ottawa, and no Ottawa source carrying one turned up. This page therefore puts no number on what insulation saves you, and a page that does put one there without naming its source is guessing. The smaller claim survives: on an attached garage the door is a large part of the wall between heated space and outside, and on both lists the insulated option is where most of the price range sits.
Every published price assumes a standard opening
Ottawa Garage Doors & Openers labels its single-door price standard 9x7 ft and its double standard 16x7 ft. Measure your opening before you compare a single quote. A width or height outside those two figures puts you outside both published lists, and neither company has published a price for a door like yours.
In Ottawa the permit question is about the opening, not the door
The City of Ottawa publishes a list of projects that do not need a building permit, and one of the entries is "Replacing doors or windows (provided they are in the same size opening)". The same page adds that "Some projects are exempted from having to obtain a building permit, however, your project must still comply with the Ontario Building Code and any applicable law, such as the Zoning By-law", and that "Designated Heritage Buildings or buildings located within a Heritage District Overlay are not subject to exemptions". Source: City of Ottawa, projects not requiring building permits, read 2026-08-28.
Two things that entry does not settle. It is written about doors and windows generally rather than about garage doors specifically, and the City ends the same page by asking anyone unsure whether their scope is exempt to contact its Building Code Client Service Centre or call 3-1-1. That is the number to call, not the door company.
And the exemption is written around four words: same size opening. Turning a single garage into a double means cutting the opening bigger, which is structural work on the house rather than a door swap. Our window and door replacement cost guide sets out that side in full, including the Building Code Act definition of construct and the section that requires a permit for a material alteration, read from e-Laws on 2026-08-12.
There is no garage door licence, so ask for the credentials that exist
Garage door work is not among the 144 skilled trades prescribed under O. Reg. 876/21 in Ontario, so it is not one of the 23 compulsory trades either. This directory read that list from the regulation on 2026-08-12 while writing its garage door repair guide, and has not re-read it since. There is no provincial certificate of qualification for garage door installation the way there is for an electrician. That is ordinary for a home service, and the practical consequence is that asking "are you licensed?" buys you a yes that means very little.
Three questions that do mean something on a new door:
- Liability insurance and WSIB coverage, in writing. These are real and verifiable, and they are what protects you if someone is hurt on your property during the install.
- Who does the electrical work on the opener. The door hardware is unregulated; the wiring is not. Electrical work in Ontario falls under the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, and a Licensed Electrical Contractor carries a seven-digit ECRA/ESA number you can check in the Electrical Safety Authority's look-up in about two minutes. Our electrician cost guide covers what that costs.
- What the quote excludes. Removal, disposal, the opener, and whether the existing tracks and hardware are being reused. On a replacement, what is not in the price is a longer list than what is.
This page is about buying a door. Fixing one is a different page.
Ottawa Garage Doors & Openers publishes both halves on one page, read 2026-08-28. The buying half is the whole-job row in the table above: a full door replacement runs $1,000 to $2,800 or more. The fixing half it publishes one service at a time rather than as a single band, so this page does not compress it into one number. A first visit that goes straight to a new door is worth a second quote before you agree to anything.
Neither published list gives a repair-or-replace threshold and this directory does not invent one. What we do have is the other half of the arithmetic. Our garage door repair cost guide carries the spring, cable and opener pricing from two Ottawa companies, plus the cycle maths that tells you whether the next failure is seven years away or next winter. Read that first if the door still opens.

Common questions
- How much does a new garage door cost in Ottawa?
- Two Ottawa companies publish figures and they are written differently, so read the units before the numbers. Ottawa Garage Doors & Openers lists a standard 9x7 ft single steel door at $1,700 to $1,900 installed, a standard 16x7 ft double at $2,500 to $2,900 installed, and an insulated polyurethane double at $2,500 to $2,800 or more installed. Advantage Enterprises Windows & Doors lists single-car doors from around $900 basic and uninsulated up to $2,800 or more insulated, double-car doors from around $1,200 up to $4,000 or more, and installation labour as a separate $300 to $800 or more. Both read 2026-08-28. This directory publishes no prices of its own.
- Does a garage door quote include installation?
- Ask, because the two published Ottawa lists answer it differently and that is where the apparent price gap comes from. One quotes doors supplied and installed. The other quotes the door and then adds labour of $300 to $800 or more, described as depending on the complexity and on whether the old door needs to be hauled away. Add that labour to its $900 entry-level single door and the total lands close to the other list's installed floor. Get three answers in writing: does the number include installation, removal of the old door, and disposal.
- Do I need a building permit to replace a garage door in Ottawa?
- The City of Ottawa's list of projects not requiring building permits includes replacing doors or windows provided they are in the same size opening, read 2026-08-28. The same page states that an exempt project must still comply with the Ontario Building Code and any applicable law such as the Zoning By-law, and that designated heritage buildings and buildings in a Heritage District Overlay are not subject to exemptions at all. The list is written about doors and windows generally rather than garage doors specifically, and the City asks anyone unsure of their scope to contact its Building Code Client Service Centre or call 3-1-1. Widening the opening, which is what turning a single into a double means, is a different question with a different answer.
- Do garage door installers need a licence in Ontario?
- Not for the door itself. Garage door work is not among the 144 skilled trades prescribed under O. Reg. 876/21 in Ontario, so there is no certificate of qualification to ask for the way there is with an electrician or a plumber. Read from the regulation by this directory on 2026-08-12. Two things still apply and both are checkable: the electrical side of an opener installation falls under the Ontario Electrical Safety Code and is work for a Licensed Electrical Contractor carrying an ECRA/ESA number, and liability insurance plus WSIB coverage are real credentials you can ask for in writing.
- Is it worth repairing a garage door instead of replacing it?
- Neither published Ottawa list gives a threshold, and this directory does not publish one either. What the numbers allow you to do is the comparison yourself. Ottawa Garage Doors & Openers publishes both sides on one page, read 2026-08-28: a full door replacement at $1,000 to $2,800 or more, and repair pricing broken out one service at a time rather than as a single band. Our separate guide at /guides/garage-door-repair-cost-ottawa carries that repair pricing in detail, including the spring cycle arithmetic that tells you whether the next failure is years away or months.
