The source prices one whole bathroom. Two bathrooms in a single project usually cost less than two separate ones, and no such discount is assumed here, so anything above 1 is a ceiling rather than a forecast.

Compare all 17 kitchen and bath renovators in Ottawa · How this order is decided

Where these numbers come from

Every figure here is a whole-bathroom range HomeStars publishes for Ottawa: $7,000 to $12,000 for cosmetic updates, $15,000 to $30,000 for a mid-range renovation with new tile, vanity, toilet and fixtures, and $40,000 to $55,000 or more for premium materials or custom work. The high tier carries the multiplier of 1 for arithmetic reasons only, because the other two have to be expressed against something. Whichever scope you choose, the number shown is the one that source prints.

How it compares against Ottawa figures

  • HomeStars' own Canada-wide guide runs below its Ottawa page, as you would expect: $5,000 to $10,000 for a basic fixture and tile update, $10,000 to $18,000 for a mid-range full bathroom, $18,000 to $35,000 or more for a master bathroom, and a national average of about $14,500. It also notes that most small bathrooms measure about 40 square feet, which is the figure to hold in mind whenever another guide quotes a price per square foot.
  • An Ottawa design-build firm publishes bathroom rates of $300 to $450 per square foot basic, $450 to $650 mid-range and $650 to $850 or more custom. The same article states a basic bathroom renovation costs $40,000 to $60,000, which at its own per-square-foot rates would be a bathroom of roughly 90 to 200 square feet, against the 40 square feet HomeStars gives as typical for a small bathroom. The two halves of that page cannot both be describing an ordinary bathroom, so neither half is used here.

Checked against the source’s own examples

The cost source publishes total project costs for these builds. Entering them above reproduces its figures, which is how the encoding here is verified rather than asserted.

BuildPublished total
Budget, cosmetic updates only$7,000 to $12,000
Mid-range, new tile, vanity, toilet and fixtures$15,000 to $30,000
High-end, premium materials or custom work$40,000 to $55,000

What this does not know

  • This prints a range, not a quote. A 1960s bathroom in Alta Vista with cast iron waste and a floor that has to come out is a different job from the same square footage in Findlay Creek, and a dropdown cannot tell them apart.
  • Moving the toilet, sink or tub is not in these figures. The source puts plumbing relocation at $1,500 to $5,000 on its own, and more in older Ottawa homes where cast iron or copper needs upgrading at the same time. Keeping the fixtures where they are is the single largest saving available.
  • The source's summary table gives one whole-bathroom figure of $12,000 to $55,000 while its scope breakdown starts at $7,000. The $7,000 belongs to the cosmetic-only tier, so if you are gutting rather than refreshing, start at the mid-range option.
  • Two bathrooms are priced here as two separate jobs. The source publishes no multi-bathroom discount, and inventing one would be worse than overstating, so anything above one bathroom is a ceiling.
  • No permit fee is added, and the two published figures disagree. The source states an Ottawa building permit for a bathroom renovation costs between $160 and $200. The City of Ottawa's own schedule charges $12.75 per $1,000 or part thereof of the assessed valuation of the work with a $117 minimum, which on a $20,000 renovation is $255. Where they disagree, the City's schedule is the one that governs.

Questions people ask

How much does a bathroom renovation cost in Ottawa?
HomeStars publishes three whole-bathroom ranges for Ottawa: $7,000 to $12,000 for cosmetic updates only, $15,000 to $30,000 for a mid-range renovation with new tile, vanity, toilet and fixtures, and $40,000 to $55,000 or more for premium materials or custom work. Its own Canada-wide guide runs lower, with a national average of about $14,500, so Ottawa sits above the national picture.
What does moving the plumbing add?
Between $1,500 and $5,000 on its own, and more in older Ottawa homes where cast iron or copper pipe has to be upgraded at the same time. That is why the same-looking bathroom can come back with two quotes thousands apart: one of them leaves the toilet where it is.
Do I need a permit for a bathroom renovation in Ottawa?
Not for cosmetic work such as painting, replacing fixtures or fitting a new vanity. You do need one if the renovation moves plumbing, alters structural walls, or adds a bathroom. The City of Ottawa charges $12.75 per $1,000, or part thereof, of the assessed valuation of the work, with a minimum of $117.00, so a $20,000 renovation carries a $255 permit rather than the $160 to $200 the cost guide estimates.
How long does a bathroom renovation take in Ottawa?
A standard full renovation typically takes one to two weeks, depending on how many tasks run in parallel. Relocating plumbing, custom tile work or structural changes all push it longer. Ask for a timeline alongside the quote, in writing.
Is this an estimate or a quote?
An estimate. It shows the published Ottawa range for the scope you picked and multiplies it by the number of bathrooms. Use it to sense-check the quotes you collect, then collect those quotes from the renovators listed below.
