How Much Does Appliance Repair Cost in Ottawa? Six Published Price Lists, and the Licence That Only Exists for Gas

Last reviewed August 2026.

Getting a technician to your door in Ottawa is published at $60 to $80 by Capital Appliance Repair, $89 plus taxes by Appliance Repair Expert and $90 by Appliance Technician, rising to $110 for addresses farther out. The repair itself runs $100 to $450 on Capital's published list and $160 to $450on Yanfix's, while AllAppliance Tech publishes averages of $220 for a washer, $225 for a dishwasher and $296 for a fridge. All three companies that publish a call-out fee credit or waive it when you approve the work, which is the tell that the fee is the wrong thing to shop on. The number that actually separates them is the labour warranty: 90 days at three of them, up to a year at one, on the same repair.

What six Ottawa companies charge you to show up

All of the figures below are published by the named company and were read on 2026-08-12: Capital Appliance Repair, Appliance Repair Expert, Appliance Technician, Yanfix, Serge Appliance Repair and AllAppliance Tech & Repair. They are six companies' pricing, not ours and not an average of the market.

Published Ottawa appliance repair call-out fees from six named companies, all read 2026-08-12
CompanyPublished for the visitIf you approve the repair
Capital Appliance Repair$60 to $80 service call feeWaived and folded into the repair price. Decline and you pay the diagnostic and nothing else.
Appliance Repair Expert$89 plus taxes for the diagnostic visit$0 diagnostic fee if you proceed. You are billed only labour and parts.
Appliance Technician$90 in Ottawa and nearby, up to $110 farther outside OttawaCredited to the repair only if the repair is approved during the same visit.
YanfixPublishes no fee of its own. Describes a typical Ottawa range of $80 to $130 depending on the company.Says it often waives the service call fee or builds it into the repair price.
Serge Appliance RepairPublishes no separate call-out fee. Describes Ottawa's typical flat repair cost as $200 to $250 plus parts, and gives its own average as $200 to $230.Not applicable to a flat-rate model.
AllAppliance Tech & RepairPublishes no service call fee at all.Not stated on its cost guide.

Two details in that table are easy to skim past and are worth money. Appliance Technician credits the fee only if the repair is approved during the same visit, so thinking it over for a day can cost you the credit. And Yanfix's $80 to $130 is not a Yanfix price at all: it is Yanfix describing what it says other Ottawa companies charge, so treat it as one company's view of its competitors rather than a survey.

Appliance Technician also publishes two things the others do not. A flat labour rate of $250 plus parts that applies only within Gatineau, and a policy of no free in-home estimates but free estimates by email if you send the model number with photos or a description of the fault. If your appliance is out of the core Ottawa area, ask about the travel premium before booking rather than after.

What the repair itself costs, by appliance

Three of the six break their pricing down by appliance. Their bands overlap but do not agree, which is the useful part: where all three land in the same place you have a reliable expectation, and where they diverge you have a question for the technician. Published figures, read 2026-08-12.

Published Ottawa appliance repair prices by appliance from three named companies, all read 2026-08-12
ApplianceCapital Appliance RepairYanfixAllAppliance Tech
Refrigerator$150 to $450$200 to $450+average $296, range $115 to $800

Dryer$100 to $400 (washers and dryers)$160 to $350 (washer and dryer)average $250, range $100 to $600
Dishwasher$120 to $380$170 to $320average $225, range $150 to $500
Stove or oven$100 to $450$160 to $400average $296, range $115 to $600
Microwavenot listednot listedaverage $133, range $50 to $300

Below the headline bands, the named faults are where the ranges come from. Yanfix publishes a dryer that will not heat at $180 to $280 for a heating element or thermal fuse, a washer that will not spin at $160 to $250 for a lid switch or drive belt, and an electric bake element at $180 to $280. It puts a compressor or sealed-system job in the $600+ bracket, and notes that a dryer belt might be a $20 part while a control board for a smart oven can be $200+. AllAppliance Tech publishes a dishwasher spray arm at $75 to $200, a door latch at $100 to $225, a heating element at $150 to $300 and a motor at $250 to $500. That is why one dishwasher quote can be a third of another and both be honest.

Serge Appliance Repair prices on a different model again, publishing a flat Ottawa repair cost of $200 to $250 plus parts and an average of $200 to $230, in an article dated 2023-11-26. A flat rate and a per-fault range are not comparable without the parts number, so ask for the parts line separately whichever model you are quoted on.

One note on the AllAppliance Tech figures, because it affects how much weight to put on them. That single page is dated three different ways: 2023 in its URL, 2025 in its heading and 2026 in its browser title. Nothing about the numbers is wrong on its face, but a reader cannot tell how old they are, and appliance parts pricing moves.

The warranty is the real price difference, and nobody compares it

Since all three companies that publish a diagnostic fee credit it back, the fee is not where they actually differ. This is:

Published warranty terms from four named Ottawa appliance repair companies, read 2026-08-12
CompanyPartsLabour
Capital Appliance Repairup to 1 yearup to 1 year
Appliance Technicianup to 1 year, manufacturer, varies by brand and part90 days
Appliance Repair Expertmanufacturer warranty on installed parts3 months
Yanfix90 days on all work90 days on all work

Do the arithmetic on a fridge. At the top of the published bands that is a repair somewhere around $450. If the same fault comes back in month five, a 90-day labour warranty means you are buying the labour again; a one-year labour warranty means the return visit is covered. That difference is worth considerably more than the $60 to $110 spread in call-out fees, and it is the comparison none of the pages ranking for this search will show you, because each of them publishes only its own terms.

Capital Appliance Repair goes further and characterises the market on its own page, stating that most appliance repair companies in Ottawa warranty 30 to 90 days and cover parts only, not labour. That is a competitor's claim about competitors and should be read as one. What can be said independently is that the three other published warranties read on 2026-08-12 sit at 90 days or three months on the labour side, which is consistent with the second half of that claim.

Licensed means nothing for your dishwasher

This is the part no page currently ranking for this search tells you, and it changes which question is worth asking.

Ontario does recognise the trade. Under O. Reg. 876/21 (Prescribed Trades and Related Matters), section 1 prescribes 144 trades and item 7 is Appliance service technician. Section 3 lists the trades for which a certifying examination is required, and the same trade is item 3 there. Read 2026-08-12, currency date 2026-08-10.

Then look at section 2, which classifies the compulsory trades. There are 23 of them. Plumber is one. Appliance service technician is not. And section 6 of the Building Opportunities in the Skilled Trades Act, 2021 reads: no individual shall engage in the practice of a compulsory trade unless they are a registered apprentice, hold a certificate of qualification, or are exempted by regulation. Section 7 says the same thing to whoever hires them.

Put those together and the position is clear: no certificate is legally required to repair your electric fridge, washer, dryer or dishwasher in Ontario.A technician can earn a certificate of qualification, and asking whether yours holds one is a perfectly good question. But nobody has to, and the Act's duty to produce proof, in section 9(1), runs to an inspector rather than to you. So when a company website says licensed next to a picture of a dishwasher, it is describing something the law does not require and you have no register to check it against.

That is not an accusation against anyone. It is a reason to spend your questions elsewhere. The checkable things on an electric appliance job are the labour warranty in days, whether the diagnostic credit is written down rather than promised, and whether the full price arrives before the work starts.

The moment gas is involved, the answer inverts

A gas range, a gas dryer or a gas oven is a different legal object. Under O. Reg. 215/01 (Fuel Industry Certificates), an appliance is defined in section 1(1) as a device that consumes or is intended to consume a gas, including its valves, fittings, controls and components. Section 3(1) then states that no person shall perform the functions of a certificate holder without first having obtained a certificate from the director, and lists the classes: gas technician 1, 2 and 3, gas piping fitter, liquid propane fitter, and among others a domestic appliance technician, the DA certificate. Read 2026-08-12, currency date 2026-08-10.

Section 31(1) then spells out the DA scope in one sentence: a DA holder may install, alter, purge, activate, repair, service or remove any unvented residential natural gas or propane gas appliance and its equipment, or a vented refrigerator with an input of 100,000 Btuh or less, other than a construction heater. And section 7 requires a DA applicant to already hold a G.3 certificate, or an operating engineer qualification, before they apply.

So on gas, which certificate do you hold is a real question with a real answer, and the classes are named in the regulation rather than in marketing copy. This page does not tell you which class your particular appliance falls under, because that depends on the appliance and its venting. Ask the company to name the class and be ready to show it.

The Ottawa market splits along exactly this line, which is how you can tell the distinction is real rather than academic. Appliance Technician states plainly that it does not perform gas or commercial appliance repairs and specialises in residential electric appliances. Appliance Repair Expert advertises the opposite, saying its workers are licensed to fix gas, electric and induction stoves and that it handles both gas and electric dryers. Yanfix warns readers about Kijiji ads offering to fix a gas stove for $50 and advises caution. Three companies, one seam.

Repair or replace: the only Ottawa rule with numbers in it

Most cost pages gesture at the age of the appliance without giving you a threshold. Yanfix publishes one and calls it the 50% Rule. Repair when the quote is under half the price of a new machine and the appliance has not reached the end of its expected lifespan, which it puts at 10 to 15 years. Replace when the quote is over half the price of a new unit and the machine is older than 12 to 15 years with multiple recent breakdowns.

Its own worked example is the part worth copying, because it counts the costs people forget. A dishwasher repair quoted at $250, against a comparable new dishwasher at $900 plus $150 for delivery and installation, is $250 against $1,050. Yanfix separately suggests reconsidering a dishwasher that is over 8 years old when the repair exceeds $400. Run the same arithmetic on the appliance in front of you, with delivery, installation and disposal of the old unit inside the replacement number rather than beside it. The same shape of decision shows up on bigger jobs too, which is what our repair versus replace guide for roofs works through.

What to ask before you book

Not generic advice. Each of these comes straight out of something one of the six companies published, which means each has a right answer you can hold them to.

  • How many days is the labour warranty, and is it separate from the parts warranty? Published answers range from 90 days to a year on labour. Ask for the number in days, in writing, because parts and labour are quoted separately by three of the four companies that publish terms.
  • Is the diagnostic fee credited if I approve the repair, and does approval have to happen on this visit? Appliance Technician publishes a same-visit condition. That is a genuine difference from a straight waiver, and it decides whether thinking overnight costs you money.
  • What is the charge if I cancel? Capital Appliance Repair publishes a $79 plus tax service call charge when an appointment is cancelled without at least 3 hours notice, payable within 24 hours of the original slot. Others do not publish a figure. Ask.
  • Am I outside your core area, and does that change the fee? Appliance Technician publishes $90 in Ottawa and nearby against up to $110 farther outside. If you are in a rural pocket, this is a real line item.
  • For anything gas: which certificate class does the technician hold? The classes are named in O. Reg. 215/01 and the DA holder scope is written out in section 31(1). A company that does gas work will answer this immediately.
  • Can you quote from the model number before you come out? Appliance Technician publishes free estimates by email when you supply the model number and photos or a description, while charging for an in-home visit. On an obvious fault that can save you the call-out entirely.
  • Will I get the full price before any work starts? Capital Appliance Repair publishes this as its sequence, quoting a written estimate covering service call, labour and parts before the repair begins. It is a reasonable thing to expect from anyone.

Two things to watch in the prices you find elsewhere

Check which Ottawa you are reading about. On 2026-08-12 the first result for the head term appliance repair cost ottawa was a US cost calculator for Ottawa, Kansas. It is an easy mistake to make at a glance, and the currency alone puts a budget out by a quarter before anything else does.

Check how old the aggregate numbers are. The one neutral, non-company price guide in these results is HomeStars' Ottawa cost guide, and it labels its own tables Costs as of September 2020. It states that it is built from 39 verified homeowner reviews from Ottawa: 20 homeowners behind washer at $229 and dryer at $254, 13 behind refrigerator at $286, and 6 behind stove at $475 and oven at $331. Six households is a thin base for a $475 average, and the whole set is nearly six years old. Read 2026-08-12. That is not a reason to ignore it, but it is a reason not to take a quote to a company and argue with it.

Where to shortlist Ottawa appliance repair companies

The appliance repair directory on Ottawa Service Directory lists Ottawa companies with their Google rating, the review count behind it, and the date last checked. Claimed listings are labeled and may appear first; how other listings are chosen is on the methodology page. Shortlist two or three, ask for the labour warranty in days, get the diagnostic credit in writing, and if the appliance burns gas, ask which certificate class the technician holds.

Common questions

How much does appliance repair cost in Ottawa?
Six Ottawa companies published figures on 2026-08-12. The visit costs $60 to $80 at Capital Appliance Repair, $89 plus taxes at Appliance Repair Expert, and $90 at Appliance Technician, rising to as much as $110 for addresses farther outside Ottawa. For the repair itself, Capital publishes $100 to $450 for most jobs, Yanfix publishes $160 to $450 depending on the appliance, and AllAppliance Tech publishes averages of $220 for a washer, $225 for a dishwasher, $250 for a dryer and $296 for a fridge or an oven. Serge Appliance Repair describes a different model again, publishing its own average repair cost as $200 to $230 plus parts, against what it calls Ottawa's typical flat rate of $200 to $250. Those are those companies' numbers, not ours and not a market rate.
Do I pay the diagnostic fee if I go ahead with the repair?
Usually not, and every published Ottawa policy read on 2026-08-12 says so in some form. Capital Appliance Repair states the fee is waived and folded into the repair price if you approve it, and that if you decline you pay the diagnostic and nothing else. Appliance Repair Expert publishes a $0 diagnostic fee if you proceed. Appliance Technician credits it only if the repair is approved during the same visit, which is a real condition worth noticing. Because they all credit it, the fee is the wrong thing to shop on.
Do appliance repair technicians need a licence in Ontario?
For electric appliances, no. Ontario's O. Reg. 876/21 prescribes 144 skilled trades and appliance service technician is item 7 on that list, with a certifying examination required under section 3. But section 2 names the 23 compulsory trades and appliance service technician is not one of them, while plumber is. The Act itself only prohibits uncertified practice in a compulsory trade. So a certificate exists and a technician may hold one, but nobody is required to, and a company advertising that it is licensed for electric appliance work is describing something the law does not demand.
Is it different for a gas stove or a gas dryer?
Completely different. Under O. Reg. 215/01 (Fuel Industry Certificates), section 3(1) states that no person shall perform the functions of a certificate holder without first having obtained a certificate from the director, and it lists the classes including gas technician 1, 2 and 3 and the domestic appliance technician or DA certificate. Section 31(1) sets out what a DA holder may do, and section 7 requires a DA applicant to already hold a G.3. The regulation defines an appliance as a device that consumes gas. So once gas is involved, which certificate do you hold is a real question with a real answer, and one Ottawa company on this page refuses gas work outright while another advertises gas stoves and gas dryers.
When is it worth replacing the appliance instead of repairing it?
Yanfix publishes the only rule in this market with numbers attached to it, and calls it the 50% Rule. Repair if the quote is less than 50 per cent of a new machine and the appliance has not reached the end of its expected lifespan, which Yanfix puts at 10 to 15 years. Replace if the quote is more than 50 per cent of a new unit and the machine is older than 12 to 15 years with multiple recent breakdowns. Yanfix also gives a worked example: a $250 dishwasher repair against a $900 replacement plus $150 delivery and install, which it totals at $1,050, and separately suggests reconsidering a dishwasher over 8 years old if the repair exceeds $400.
What is the biggest real difference between Ottawa appliance repair companies?
The labour warranty, not the fee. Capital Appliance Repair publishes up to one year on both parts and labour. Appliance Technician publishes up to 1-year parts and 90 days labour. Appliance Repair Expert publishes a full 3-month warranty on all repairs. Yanfix publishes a 90-day warranty on all work. On a fridge repair in the $450 range, the gap between 90 days of labour cover and a year of it is worth more than the entire $60 to $110 spread in diagnostic fees, and it is the one number none of these pages puts side by side.
