What Ottawa's Fence By-law allows
A fence needs no building permit in Ottawa, so the by-law is the rule that matters, and a good fence company quotes to it without being asked. Source: City of Ottawa, Fence By-law 2003-462.
- 1 m in a front yard, 213 cm in any other yard on residential property, and 3 m on non-residential property.
- 75 cm near corners and driveways. Inside the triangle 3 m along the lot lines from a street corner, and the one 2 m along the lot line and the driveway, nothing over 75 cm may stand.
- The finished side faces out. Section 15 requires the side facing the street and the neighbours to be finished, which the City calls its good neighbour policy.
- No barbed or electric wire on residential property, and chain link there has to be vinyl or powder coated.

Why a pool or a utility locate changes the job
A pool changes the rules. A fence that acts as a pool enclosure needs a pool enclosure permit, and the by-law makes it an offence to build a fence that leaves an existing pool enclosure non-conforming. A replacement run along a pool side is not a like-for-like swap.
The locate sets the start date. Requesting one through Ontario One Call is free and required before digging, and utility owners have five business days to complete a locate for one address. Ask each company who books it.
How to compare fence quotes
Review counts get you a shortlist. Two quotes are only comparable when they describe the same fence, so ask every company to put these on separate lines:
- the material and the board or panel style, by name;
- the post material, the post spacing and how deep the posts go;
- each gate, with its width and hardware;
- removal of the old fence, and who books the locate.

There is no single best one, because the right company depends on the fence. On the measure used here, the number of Google reviews behind a rating, Fence-All leads with 389 Google reviews at 4.5 as of 20 October 2026.

- Do you need a permit to put up a fence in Ottawa?
- Not a building permit. The City of Ottawa says a permit is not required to build or replace a fence, but the fence must meet the Fence By-law 2003-462. A fence that forms a pool enclosure needs a pool enclosure permit, and designated heritage properties are not covered by the exemption, so the City asks those owners to check with a Building Client Service Centre first.
- Can my neighbour put up a 7 foot fence in Ottawa?
- In a back or side yard, close to it. The Fence By-law allows 213 cm, about 7 feet, in any residential yard other than the front yard, where the limit is 1 m. Gates may be 30 cm higher, an entrance archway may reach 250 cm, and post caps may add 15 cm. Near a street corner or a driveway the limit drops to 75 cm.
- Can I build a 10 or 12 foot fence in Ottawa?
- Not on residential property. The Fence By-law caps a residential fence at 213 cm outside the front yard, and 3 m on non-residential property. A taller structure is a different question from a fence, and the by-law page on ottawa.ca is the place to check one before anything is built.
- Do I have to pay for half of my neighbour's fence in Ontario?
- Only if you agree, or if fence-viewers say so. Ontario's Line Fences Act lets an owner ask the municipal clerk for fence-viewers, three of whom examine the property and issue an award. Its default is that each owner builds and keeps up half, or one builds and the other pays half, unless that would be unjust. It does not make a neighbour pay for a fence already built alone.
- How much does a fence cost in Ottawa?
- It depends on the material and the length, and this page publishes no price. Commence Fence Inc., an Ottawa fence contractor listed in this directory, publishes per-foot prices by material on its own site, and our Fencing page shows that range with the date we read it. Ask for the material, post depth and gates as separate lines.
